Art Connects: Building Cultural Competence in the Arts

Monday, Feb 24, 2020, 3:00PM-6:00PM
Meridian Arts Centre

PAONE is proud to announce a partnered event with North York Arts (NYA). As non-Indigenous Arts Service Organizations how do we build positive and authentic relationships with Indigenous communities? How can we incorporate a model of best practice both within our programs and on an institutional level to better support Indigenous artists and communities? How does the Truth & Reconciliation Act apply to work in the arts? Joining us will be NYA, as well as artists Aqua Nibii Waawaaskone, Veronica Johnny and Elder Joanne Dallaire, for a meal and discussion on building positive and authentic relationships in the arts sector.

This program will start the conversation on how our organizations can better incorporate/adapt some of these concepts to support the process of decolonization. We hope to embrace a judgement-free space where everyone is able to gain knowledge and create action plans for developing real relationships. This is an opportunity to ask questions and engage in meaningful conversation.

Although this event is open to all, priority will be given first to PAONE Members working in partnerships, outreach, or other programming focused on engaging and working with Indigenous communities. This will not be an introductory conversation and we wish to come to the table with specific questions and goals from all participants.

This project has been made possible by the Government of Canada, North York Arts.
We are honoured to share the conversation with you.
