ICYMI - PAONE Artist Educator Meetup Recap
March 10, 2021 @ 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM EST
Online via zoom & Discord
Free for MEMBERS & Non-MEmbers*
On Wednesday, March 10th, PAONE hosted a virtual Artist Educator Meetup, where we invited members and non-members alike to join us for an opportunity to network, dialogue, share successes, discuss challenges, and build community between and within artist educators and arts administrators in our sector. We had fantastic attendance for this event (more than 45 folks joined us!) and also had the chance to explore Discord as an interface.
A special thank you and welcome to the PAONE community for all of the non-members and first-time attendees who joined us on Wednesday! If you'd like to become a member - giving you access to more events, professional development, networking, resource sharing, offers & discounts from other members, and more - go to our website and choose the membership that's right for you. Remember that we truly just want to connect with you and support you in your arts education work, so a subsidized annual membership can cost as little as $25! Write to us at paone.arts@gmail.com or reach out to any of the Board members for more information.
A little bit about Discord...
Discord is a free online meeting platform that allows you to easily create a virtual community to suit the needs of your group. Your “server” is accessible only to the people you invite. Discord gives you the ability to organize conversations through topic-based text channels.
Work in teams
Share information
collect brainstorming ideas in relevant text channels
Move Seamlessly through voice/video channels specifically designed so you can pop in and out of conversations.
Members can freely move from the main room to breakout rooms without being assigned by the meeting host or admin.
A useful platform for team meetings, virtual networking events, running multi-group programming or virtual rehearsals.
Resources Shared
A number of you submitted great next steps and ideas for future artist-educator focused events, so be on the lookout for these in the upcoming months! In addition, check out the list of resources that were shared by colleagues:
Online platforms:
Jamulus - Suggested for music lessons, choirs, bands, etc. Allows overlap of audio from all participants.
Menti - Build word clouds, break the ice, brainstorm together.
Jamboard (available through Google/G Suite) - Create an inspiration board, record group brainstorms, virtual sticky-notes (need we say more?)
Padlet - Similar to Jamboard - can post ideas in a virtual sticky note format; describes itself as a virtual mood board
Gather.Town - Re-create more natural interaction in a virtual space that allows movement and interaction with others.
Miro - Functions as an online whiteboard; create, collaborate, format, explore - it’s great for non-linear thinking (flow charts, brainstorming, etc.)
Kahoot - Interface for games, trivia, learning, meetings; good for classrooms.
Professional Development Opportunities:
Coursera - Hosts a number of free MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Recommendations from Meetup participants included: Indigenous Canada (by University of Alberta), Art and Inquiry (by MoMA) and Aboriginal Worldview and Education (by University of Toronto).
For those of you who attended and consented to share contact information, be on the lookout for a link to our contact list!
